P.D Vinoji Birth Plan
Mother-to-be: P.D. Vinoji Partner: P. Dayaparan
Due Date: 13/06/2005 Practitioner: Dr. Malikka
Place of Birth: Namakkal
This birth plan is intended to express the preference and desires we have for the birth of our baby. It is not intended to be a script. We fully realize that situations may arise such that our plan cannot and should not be followed. However, we hope that barring any extenuating circumstances, you will be able to keep us informed and aware of our options.
I/we Wish to inform even we have absolute trust and belief with our vast experienced Doctor Malikka and we request she be present right through the labour and the delivery of our baby.
We have prepared this Birth Plan to help you understand our philosophy and the kind of care we hope to have for the birth of our child. The pregnancy has gone very well thus far. We have been careful to eat well and stay fit, and have done everything we can to prepare for a healthy and uncomplicated birth. We wish for as natural a birth as possible, avoiding unnecessary procedures and medications. However, if medications or procedures become necessary, we ask that you discuss them with us in advance so that we can participate in the decision making. Here is a list of a few specific preferences that we have.
Summary of Birth Plan
I/we would like:
-
To request room number 510 if it is available.
- To be allowed to eat light foods and liquids during labor.
- My husband Daya, and labor assistant to be present at all times.
- To invite Head Nurse Dhanam to be present.
- To avoid an epidural and other pain medication: if needed we want to be the ones to request it.
- To use position changes, showers, relaxation, and breathing techniques for pain management.
- To avoid an episiotomy by using: massage, hot compresses, slow pushing, and position changes.
- Daya to have the option to cut the cord.
- No bright lights, loud noises, or visitors during the first hour of birth to allow for bonding.
- To delay all routine exams on baby for minimum of one hour to allow for bonding.
- Baby placed on mine or Daya's chest with blankets and overhead warmer, if warming is necessary.
- To breastfeed only; absolutely no bottles, pacifiers, artificial nipples, formula, or water.
In case of a Cesarean birth or complications with the baby our main requests are to have either myself or Daya with our baby at all times, to have decisions explained and information given, only with consent of Dr. Malikka.
Detailed Birth Plan
First Stage (Labor):
-
Dim lights.
- Peace and Quiet.
- Music of our choice in our IPOD.
- Would prefer my own clothes to gown.
- Would prefer not to have students, residents etc.
- Would prefer to keep vaginal exams to a minimum, high vaginal swab to check for infection, no further internal exams be given in order to reduce the chances of introducing an infection
- Maintain mobility (Walking, rocking, up to bathroom, etc.)
- Eat and drink to comfort.
- Clear fluids.
- Ice chips.
- Continuous Monitoring with external monitor.
- Please do not offer me pain medications, I will ask for them if I want them.
- Relaxation techniques (breathing, focusing, etc.).
- Positioning as desired.
- Heat or Cold packs.
- Massage (back, foot, counter pressure, etc.).
- Acupressure
Induction:
- I would prefer to use natural methods to start labor.
Augmentation:
- I would prefer to walk to speed labor.
Second Stage (Birth):
- Choice of position
- Prolonged length, if progress is being made
- Spontaneous Bearing Down
- I would prefer no episiotomy, but please use compresses, massage and positioning.
Baby Care:
- Delay the cord cutting
- Prefer partner to cut the cord.
- Delay the eye medication
- Breast feeding only
- No pacifiers or glucose water
- Separation only after recovery period
Cesarean Birth:
- Partner present
- Video/Pictures taken
- Screen lowered to view the birth or mirror
- Explain the surgery as it's happening
- Free one hand to touch the baby
- Partner to cut the cord
- Breast feeding in recovery room
Sick Baby:
- Breast feeding as soon as possible
- Unlimited visitation for parents
- Handling the baby (Kangaroo care, holding, care of, etc.)
- If the baby is transported to another facility, move us as soon as possible
If a cesarean is necessary, I would prefer, if circumstances allow, to be given an epidural rather than a general anaesthetic. I would like my partner to be present at the birth, and I would like either my partner or I to hold the baby immediately upon delivery. I would like the baby to be in my partner's care during the time it takes to stitch me back up.
If the baby should require transportation to an intensive care unit, I wish my partner to go with the baby and my sister Ms. Anushi to stay with me. Should the baby need to stay in hospital, I would still plan to breast feed, and request that nothing else be given to the baby by bottle. If necessary, I would express breast milk to be bottle fed to baby, if for some reason I could not be there in person
After the birth, I would like to be released home at as early a date as possible. I look forward to a rewarding and productive partnership with my birth attendants
Thanking you,
Vinoji Dayaparan.
